What does VCI stand for and exactly how does it stop farm equipment from rusting? +
VCI stands for Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor. The plastic barrier (or the paper wrap) is impregnated with proprietary chemical salts. Once wrapped tightly around a tractor or cast-iron engine block, the salts sublimate (turn directly from a solid into a vapor). This protective gas expands everywhere inside the package, forming a microscopic 1-molecule thick shield directly on the surface of the steel, permanently blocking airborne moisture and oxygen from initiating the galvanic oxidation process.
How do you prevent 'Container Rain' from raining rust down onto exported machinery components? +
"Container Rain" occurs when a massive steel intermodal shipping container travels from a hot, humid Asian port into the freezing North Atlantic ocean. Basic tarps are held down strictly by ropes and bungee cords. When a train travels across the plains at 50 mph, the air violently catches inside the loose tarp like a parachute. This causes severe "wind-whipping". The rough woven material brutally slaps against the brand-new tractor thousands of times per hour, severely scratching the high-gloss paint down to the bare metal.
