BENZ Packaging / 2026–2030 implementation roadmap

The sustainability journey: measure, redesign, circulate, prove.

BENZ Packaging is establishing a sustainability program for its operations, packaging systems and industrial supply-chain work. The sequence begins with verified baselines and moves through controlled pilots, scaled implementation and public progress reporting.

Program status / foundation stage

This roadmap describes the implementation method. It is not an achieved-results report and does not state that BENZ is carbon neutral, net zero, carbon negative or zero waste.

Roadmap foundation

A target follows the baseline.

A credible sustainability roadmap states what is measured, who owns the data, which boundary applies and when progress will be reviewed. BENZ will publish numerical reduction targets only after the relevant operating and packaging baselines have been approved.

This prevents an attractive target from becoming a misleading claim. It also gives customers a stable method for comparing packaging revisions, returnable systems and material changes.

01 / Measure

Establish operating and packaging baselines

Define organisational boundaries, energy and fuel sources, waste streams, purchased materials and material Scope 3 categories. For packaging projects, record the current pack version, dimensions, mass, bill of materials, route and damage history.

02 / Reduce

Prioritise physical reductions

Reduce avoidable material, empty space, energy use, process waste and preventable transport before considering compensation. Product protection remains inside the boundary because corrosion, breakage and repeat shipment can erase a material saving.

03 / Circulate

Keep packaging and materials in productive use

Apply component-level design-for-recycling checks, verified recycled-content evidence and returnable systems on lanes that can support collection, inspection, repair and measured rotations.

04 / Prove

Control every environmental statement

Link each claim to a named product or organisational boundary, method, source data, assumptions, owner, approval date and expiry or review date. Publish limitations beside the claim, not in a disconnected disclaimer.

The dates below define an operating sequence, not a promise that a metric has already been achieved. Each phase has an evidence gate before public language is expanded.

Baseline and control

Build the data and approval architecture required for defensible decisions.

  • Confirm organisational and operational GHG boundaries for Scope 1, Scope 2 and material Scope 3 screening.
  • Create packaging bill-of-material and mass templates for priority product families.
  • Introduce a component-level design-for-recycling scorecard and supplier-evidence register.
  • Assign technical, procurement, operations and publishing owners for sustainability claims.
  • Select one repeat B2B lane for a serialized returnable-packaging feasibility study.
2027

Controlled pilots

Test improvement methods on defined applications before making broader commitments.

  • Run a measured returnable-packaging pilot with issue, return, inspection, repair, loss and retirement records.
  • Complete pack-to-pack CarbonSmart comparisons on selected customer projects with a declared boundary and route.
  • Pilot QR-linked Packaging Evidence Records for selected pack versions.
  • Qualify recovery partners for clean, concentrated material streams where commercial and logistics conditions are viable.
  • Evaluate operational energy-efficiency and renewable-electricity opportunities against the approved baseline.

Scale verified methods

Expand only the methods that show repeatable environmental and protection performance.

  • Extend returnable systems to additional suitable lanes after the first pilot meets return, damage and cost gates.
  • Apply supplier declarations, recycled-content records and recovery instructions to more packaging families.
  • Use the CarbonSmart comparison template as a controlled design-review output.
  • Introduce supplier sustainability questions for material origin, recycled content, compliance documents and manufacturing evidence.

Review and assurance

Test the reliability of material metrics, emissions data and published comparisons.

  • Commission an appropriate independent review of selected material sustainability indicators.
  • Publish progress, gaps, method changes and missed milestones with the same visibility as positive results.
  • Recalculate targets if organisational boundaries, acquisition scope, major product mix or measurement methods change.
2030

Disclose performance

Report performance against approved baselines and state the next transition period.

  • Publish actual changes in energy, emissions, material intensity, landfill waste, recycled content and measured packaging rotations where data quality permits.
  • Separate absolute reductions, intensity changes, customer project outcomes and any external environmental contribution.
  • State which targets were achieved, not achieved, revised or retired and provide the method for each result.

Proposed public scorecard

Progress will be reported through defined indicators.

Numerical targets and baseline years will be added only after internal approval and data-quality review. The categories below are the proposed reporting structure.

Operations

Energy and emissions

Scope 1 and 2 emissions, renewable-electricity share, energy intensity and material Scope 3 categories, with organisational boundaries and calculation method.

Materials

Mass and recovery design

Packaging material intensity, verified recycled-content share, design-for-recycling review coverage and waste sent to landfill.

Circular systems

Returns and rotations

Returnable fleet size, return rate, completed rotations, loss, repair, damage and retirement route for each defined program.

Claims boundary

BENZ will not convert tree planting, green credits, avoided emissions or customer packaging savings into a company-wide carbon-negative or net-zero claim without the required inventory, boundary, reductions, removals and independent evidence.

Governance

Every metric needs an owner and review cycle.

A roadmap becomes operational when responsibility is assigned. The proposed BENZ structure separates data ownership, technical interpretation and publication approval.

Maintains energy, fuel, waste and operating-activity records and documents changes in organisational boundaries.

Engineering

Packaging method owner

Approves pack baselines, material data, protection tests, routes, comparison methods and engineering limitations.

Procurement

Supplier evidence owner

Controls declarations, recycled-content evidence, chain-of-custody documents, certificates and validity dates.

Management

Target and disclosure approval

Approves the baseline, targets, investment plan, annual progress statement and corrective action when performance differs from plan.

Publishing

Claims control

Publishes only approved language and keeps the claim, scope, method, evidence reference and limitation together.

Roadmap questions

Clear status. Clear boundaries.

Is BENZ Packaging carbon neutral or net zero today?

This roadmap does not make either claim. A credible organisational claim requires an approved greenhouse-gas inventory, defined Scope 1, Scope 2 and relevant Scope 3 boundaries, a reduction pathway, treatment of residual emissions, evidence and transparent reporting.

Why does the roadmap not publish numerical 2030 targets yet?

A percentage target without a reliable baseline can mislead. BENZ will add numerical targets after the relevant baseline year, organisational boundary, data owner, method and review process are approved.

Does BENZ plan to become carbon negative or carbon positive?

BENZ will prioritise measured emissions reduction. The terms carbon positive and carbon negative are not being used as commitments because their interpretation varies and a net-removal claim would require verified removals exceeding the full defined footprint.

What is the first practical action in the roadmap?

The first action is the evidence foundation: operational emissions boundaries, packaging bills of material, current-pack baselines, supplier documentation, claim approval and selection of a controlled returnable-packaging pilot.
