BENZ Packaging / CarbonSmart

Measure the carbon impact of industrial packaging.

BENZ CarbonSmart compares an existing pack with a proposed design across material use, pack dimensions, transport, reuse and end of life.

Product protection stays inside the review because corrosion, damage and replacement shipments also carry a carbon cost.

Packaging carbon footprint

More than material weight.

A lighter pack can reduce material use and still perform poorly if it wastes container space, cannot return, or allows product damage. CarbonSmart reviews the packaging as part of the shipment rather than as an isolated material sample.

01Material

Component type, mass, recycled content and converting requirements.

02Transport

Pack dimensions, load density, distance, mode and return movement.

03Protection

Corrosion, breakage, rework and the risk of replacement shipment.

04Next use

Reuse cycles, collection conditions and the practical recovery route.

CarbonSmart method

One comparison. Four steps.

Start with the pack used today, then compare a proposed design for the same product, protection requirement and transport route.

  1. 01
    Map the current pack

Record dimensions, component weights, materials, packing process and shipment route.

  2. 02
    Design the alternative

Right-size the pack, remove avoidable material and evaluate reusable or recoverable components.

  3. 03
    Compare the shipment

Review material, cube, transport, expected reuse and protection performance together.

  4. 04
    Choose the better system

Present the changes, assumptions and practical actions required to implement the design.

Carbon terminology

Carbon terms, in plain language.

These terms answer different questions. A packaging comparison measures a pack or shipment; a net-zero target covers a much wider company value chain.

Packaging carbon footprint
The greenhouse-gas emissions associated with a defined packaging system across the lifecycle stages included in the calculation.
Lower-carbon packaging
A pack calculated to have a lower footprint than a named alternative for the same protection requirement and route.
Carbon neutral
A defined footprint that has been measured, reduced and balanced for a stated period using an identified method.
Net zero
Deep reductions across an organisation and its relevant value chain, with durable removals used for remaining emissions.
Carbon negative
A term generally used when verified removals exceed the remaining emissions within the complete stated footprint.
Carbon positive
An ambiguous phrase. It can mean climate benefit or increased emissions, so a specific measured result is clearer.

Start a CarbonSmart review

One product. One route. Two pack designs.

A useful first project does not need a company-wide study. Select one recurring shipment where the current packaging, route and protection requirement are known.

What you share

The product, present packaging, component weights, shipment route, annual volume and any known damage, corrosion or handling issues.

What BENZ develops

A packaging alternative, a side-by-side CarbonSmart review and a practical plan covering design, sourcing, trials and implementation.

Buyer questions

Packaging carbon, answered.

What is included in a packaging carbon footprint?

Depending on the review, it can include raw materials, converting, transport, packing, distribution, reuse and end of life. CarbonSmart defines the included stages for the selected packaging system.

Is recyclable packaging always lower carbon?

No. Material weight, manufacturing energy, transport efficiency, reuse, product damage and real recovery conditions can all change the result.

What is the difference between carbon neutral and net zero?

Carbon neutral can apply to a defined footprint and period. Net zero normally requires deep reductions across a company and its relevant value chain, followed by removals for residual emissions.
