BENZ Packaging / Evidence and claims standard

Every sustainability statement needs a traceable record.

The BENZ Packaging Evidence Record is a proposed versioned structure for the exact pack, material data, supplier documents, protection requirements, recovery conditions, calculations and approved language behind a sustainability statement.

Program status / development pathway

The record is being defined as an evidence architecture. It is not represented as a legally compliant Digital Product Passport unless the applicable regulation and product scope are confirmed.

Packaging Evidence Record

The claim follows the pack version.

Packaging sustainability evidence must identify the construction being discussed. If a coating, adhesive, supplier, recycled-content level, route or recovery assumption changes, the approved statement may no longer apply.

The proposed record gives BENZ engineers and customers one place to see identity, performance, material, compliance and end-of-use information.

01 / Identity

Pack and version

Product family, packaging code, revision, issue date, customer application, functional unit, dimensions, mass and status.

02 / Construction

Bill of materials

Every component, material type, weight, coating, adhesive, tape, label, ink, barrier, fastener and relevant accessory.

03 / Source

Supplier evidence

Specification, declaration, recycled-content support, chain-of-custody or certification reference, batch or validity scope and review date.

04 / Performance

Protection requirement

Load, compression, drop, vibration, corrosion, moisture, cleanliness, export and handling conditions, with test or qualification references where applicable.

05 / Recovery

End-of-use conditions

Separation instructions, contamination limits, collection system, return route, recycling stream, geographic limitation and processing assumptions.

06 / Comparison

Baseline and method

Current pack, proposed pack, calculation file, lifecycle boundary, geography, route, dataset, assumptions, exclusions and uncertainty.

07 / Claim

Approved language

Exact public statement, product and market scope, qualifying language, evidence owner, approver, approval date and expiry or review date.

08 / Change

Revision history

What changed, why the record was revised, which evidence was replaced and whether the previous claim was withdrawn or recertified.

Claims evidence matrix

Each environmental term has a minimum proof set.

Broad phrases such as green, eco-friendly and sustainable can imply more than the evidence supports. BENZ uses the most specific statement available and keeps conditions next to the claim.

Proposed claimMinimum supporting evidenceRequired qualification
Reduced materialNamed baseline and proposed pack, equivalent functional requirement, measured mass, calculation and revision.Percentage, component or total pack, date and application.
Contains recycled contentMaterial-specific percentage by mass, supplier declaration or recognised certification, specification or batch scope.Component, percentage, pre- or post-consumer basis where known and validity.
RecyclableComplete construction review, component compatibility, separability, contamination conditions and relevant collection/reprocessing route.Material stream, geography and conditions; certification only when the exact pack is certified.
Reusable / returnableDesign duty, inspection and repair method, defined return responsibility and operating records when actual reuse is claimed.Lane, participants, measured rotations or clearly identified design intent.
Closed loopIssued and returned assets, recapture, inspections, rotations, loss, repair and retirement route for the defined system.Lane, fleet, reporting period and measured result.
Lower carbon footprintNamed baseline, functional unit, compatible method, boundary, geography, route, dataset, assumptions and review.Exact percentage or result, excluded stages and version.
Carbon neutral / net zeroFull applicable inventory, reduction pathway, residual emissions, credits or removals, registry and retirement details, period and appropriate assurance.Entity or product boundary, scopes, method, target year and continuing disclosure.
Compostable / biodegradableApplicable standard, test or certification for the exact construction and specified conditions.Industrial or home conditions, timeframe, collection route and geography.

Claims approval lifecycle

A claim is reviewed before publication and after material change.

The process is intended for webpages, proposals, datasheets, labels, sales presentations, certificates and customer responses.

Step 1

Request

State the proposed wording, audience, channel, product, market and business reason. Avoid selecting a badge or slogan before the evidence is reviewed.

Step 2

Evidence assembly

Collect the current pack record, supplier documents, test results, calculations, route conditions and regulatory or certification references.

Step 3

Technical review

Check equivalence, construction, method, system boundary, assumptions, recovery route and conflicts between evidence sources.

Step 4

Claim drafting

Use specific language, state the baseline and conditions and remove any implication that a component result applies to the whole pack or company.

Step 5

Approval

Record the technical owner, compliance or management approver, approved wording, channels, date and next review.

Step 6

Monitor and withdraw

Reassess when suppliers, materials, regulations, datasets, routes or packaging versions change. Remove superseded language from active sales and digital channels.

QR, evidence record and DPP

Digital access does not replace data governance.

A QR code can connect a physical pack to a versioned record, but the data still needs identity, ownership, access control, revision, validity and a stable resolver. The proposed BENZ record supports practical customer evidence while standards and legal Digital Product Passport requirements continue to develop.

Public layer

Use and recovery instructions

Pack identity, material summary, separation or return instructions, approved claims and customer-facing limitations.

Customer layer

Project evidence

Detailed bill of materials, route notes, test references, declared calculations and customer-specific documents under appropriate access.

Controlled layer

Supplier and approval records

Commercially sensitive declarations, internal calculations, reviewer notes, approval history and superseded documents.

Digital Product Passport boundary

BENZ will describe the system as a Packaging Evidence Record until the applicable legal DPP scope, data requirements, identifier, carrier and conformity obligations are confirmed for the product and market.

Evidence questions

What a buyer can request.

What is a Packaging Evidence Record?

It is a proposed versioned record connecting a defined packaging configuration with its bill of materials, supplier evidence, protection requirements, recovery conditions, calculations, approved claims and revision history.

Is the BENZ Packaging Evidence Record a Digital Product Passport?

No legal DPP compliance claim is made. The record is being designed to support traceable packaging information while the applicable product scope and regulatory requirements are confirmed.

What evidence supports a recyclable-packaging claim?

The complete construction must be reviewed, including coatings, adhesives, tapes, labels, inks, barriers, separability, contamination and the collection or reprocessing route in the relevant market.

How long does a sustainability claim remain valid?

Only while the approved pack version, supplier evidence, method, route and applicable requirements remain materially unchanged and the stated review or expiry date has not passed.

Can a supplier declaration alone prove the whole packaging claim?

Usually not. A supplier declaration may support one material or component attribute, but the public claim must still match the complete pack, application, route and market conditions.
