A closed loop is an operating route.

BENZ develops closed-loop packaging for repeat industrial lanes where assets can be issued, recovered, inspected, repaired and returned to service. Durability alone does not make a packaging system closed loop.

The BENZ operating model is defined below. Lane-specific claims become available only after a pilot demonstrates actual returns and rotations.

Closed-loop definition

The pack, reverse route and controls form one system.

Closed-loop packaging is reusable or recoverable packaging that operates inside a defined return system. The system identifies who owns the asset, where it moves, how it is returned, what happens during inspection and repair and when it leaves service.

Recyclable packaging can enter an open recovery market after use. Returnable packaging is designed for more than one use. Closed-loop packaging adds a controlled route and measured recapture. The terms describe different conditions.

Identify shipper, receiver, collection points, transport modes, distances, dwell time, frequency, return responsibility and exception routes.

Engineer the pack for rotations

Specify load, stack, impact, corrosion, moisture, ergonomics, cleanability, repairability, folding or nesting and service-life assumptions.

03 / Identity

Serialize the asset

Use a durable identifier linked to asset type, owner, issue date, location or custodian, inspection history and retirement status.

04 / Issue

Record every dispatch

Capture issue event, destination, shipment reference, asset count and expected return date or next controlled hand-off.

05 / Return

Operate reverse logistics

Define consolidation, collection frequency, transport responsibility, handling, empty-cube strategy and escalation for overdue or diverted assets.

06 / Inspect

Apply acceptance criteria

Inspect cleanliness, dimensions, fasteners, cushioning, structural damage and product-contact or corrosion-protection requirements before reuse.

07 / Repair

Restore controlled performance

Use approved repair instructions, replacement components, rejection criteria and evidence that the asset remains fit for the next defined duty.

08 / Retire

Document end of service

Record the reason for retirement and the reuse, component recovery, recycling or disposal route. Retired assets are removed from active inventory.

A BENZ closed-loop pilot is designed around stage gates. The pack advances only when protection, return, asset control and economics remain acceptable.

Feasibility

Confirm repeat demand, stable participants, suitable cargo, route visibility, reverse-logistics capacity and sufficient single-use replacement opportunity.

Engineering validation

Prototype and test the asset against the defined product, load, handling and environmental conditions.

Gate 2

Limited fleet

Issue a serialized pilot fleet with named custodians, scan events, expected return intervals and inspection criteria.

Gate 3

Measured review

Review actual return rate, turnaround, loss, repairs, damage, handling feedback and reverse-transport performance after the agreed pilot period.

Gate 4

Scale decision

Expand, redesign, hold or stop the program. A closed-loop claim is limited to the lane, fleet, period and results that were measured.

Program scorecard

Return, protection and cost are reported together.

A high rotation count does not prove success if cargo damage, cleaning burden, losses or reverse transport are unacceptable. BENZ reviews the operating system as a whole.

Claim threshold

BENZ will describe a system as closed loop only after the defined lane operates with measured issue, return, inspection and recapture data. A reusable design or customer intention is not enough.

What is closed-loop packaging?

Closed-loop packaging is packaging recovered through a defined system for another controlled use or material route. The system includes ownership, participants, reverse logistics, identification, inspection, repair, records and retirement controls.

Is returnable packaging always closed loop?

No. A returnable pack can be technically reusable without an operating collection and recapture system. Closed-loop status requires the reverse route and actual return evidence.

Which industrial routes are suitable?

Repeat plant-to-plant, supplier, automotive, component, service-part and internal logistics lanes are strong candidates when participants, frequency, asset responsibility and reverse transport are stable.

What data should a pilot collect?

At minimum: assets issued and due, assets returned, rotations, turnaround time, losses, repairs, product damage, reverse-transport activity and the retirement route.

Can BENZ guarantee a waste or carbon reduction before the pilot?

No. BENZ can model a proposed scenario, but the public result should follow measured fleet, route and performance data under a declared boundary.
