The Problem

Moisture Is the Most Expensive Thing in the Box

Most cargo damage is not caused by impact or theft; it is caused by water that was never visible at the loading dock. A sealed container, a barrier bag, a crate of electronics or a drum of pharmaceutical intermediate all carry moisture in their air and packing materials, and as that package crosses climate zones the humidity cycles, condenses on cold surfaces and attacks the goods, surface rust on steel, mould on textiles, corrosion on circuit boards, delamination on packaging, label lift on pharma. A desiccant is the small, cheap component that decides whether the consignment arrives saleable or written off.

The mistake buyers make is treating "a desiccant" as one commodity. It is not. The right desiccant depends on the moisture load, the humidity range, the temperature, the duration and the sensitivity of the goods, and choosing the wrong type, or the wrong quantity, is how containers still arrive wet despite carrying desiccant. The Four Desiccant Technologies, and When Each Wins

Different chemistry for different moisture problems. The right choice is about matching capacity and humidity range to the cargo.

Calcium Chloride (CaCl²)
The highest-capacity desiccant, absorbing 300–600% of its weight, accelerating as humidity rises. The only technology that truly eliminates container rain on long ocean voyages. BENZPACK BE DRY and BE DRY ULTRA.
Activated Clay (Montmorillonite)
Economical, chemically stable, nitrite-free and stays solid when saturated, the safe choice inside barrier bags with metals, PCBs and pharma. DIN 55473 / MIL-D-3464E. BENZPACK C DRY.
Silica Gel
Holds ~25–40% of its weight, best in low-to-moderate humidity and small enclosures; widely recognised but saturates early on long, hot, humid container routes.
Molecular Sieve
Synthetic crystalline adsorbent that captures moisture even at very low humidity, used where an extremely dry endpoint is required, such as sealed electronics and gas drying.

Define the Moisture Load

Container or pack volume, weight of hygroscopic packing materials, ambient humidity at sealing, barrier films and the duration of transit or storage.

Calcium chloride for high-load container routes, activated clay for sensitive sealed packs, silica gel or molecular sieve where the application calls for it.

Calculate the Quantity

The DIN 55473 Desiccant Unit (DU) method converts the moisture load into the exact number of units, so the cargo is neither under- nor over-protected.
