Inbound Machinery Packaging for UK Port Dwell

Machinery bound for a UK plant often sits in a closed container on the North Sea leg, then waits in damp island air at Felixstowe, Southampton or London Gateway. Condensation on cold metal is the usual inbound fault. BENZ mobilises project teams to the origin plant to survey sit time and pack the machine for that dwell.

Closed-box air is still wet

A closed container on a North Sea winter crossing still sweats. Unpainted ferrous and ground ways take condensate if they travel open. Whether a sealed barrier and desiccant belong in the pack depends on sailing season, how long the box may wait at the terminal, and whether the receiving hall is heated. The survey records those facts. It does not assume every inbound crate needs the same envelope.

Where regulated solid-wood packaging is used for an international shipment into Great Britain, treatment and marking are specified to the destination's applicable ISPM-15 requirements. Processed-wood materials such as plywood, and wood 6 mm or thinner, may be exempt, subject to destination rules and the customer specification. Northern Ireland follows a separate set of wood-packaging rules. Marks that are required have to remain readable after terminal handling. Centre-of-gravity and lifting data have to match the inbound crane, which is often a different machine from the factory crane at origin.

If the cargo is already wrapped at origin, the specification still has to hold harbour air and a possible extra lift. If it will not, the wrap is finished before stuffing.

Origin work

Pack for the inbound check, not only for the haul

Teams survey at origin: machine type, photographs, residual fluids, destination terminal, and expected UK warehouse time. Exposed ways take VCI where the survey agrees. Cabinets are sealed against dust. Mixed lots are split by risk.

Useful information for a quote: origin plant, UK destination and terminal, equipment list, photographs, expected berth or warehouse time, and any receiving packing specification.

What to send

Terminal, season and the receiving spec

Felixstowe in February is a different dwell from a same-week Southampton stuff in July. Send the expected terminal and month. That usually decides whether a sealed barrier is in the specification.

If the UK plant has a receiving packing specification, send it. Inbound inspectors work from that paper. A crate built only to origin habit still fails if the paper asked for a different mark or a different opening sequence.

Say at origin whether the crate is new solid timber, reused solid timber or processed wood. Where ISPM-15 marks are required, they have to remain readable after the sea leg.
