Used machinery export packing applies the same ocean physics as new-machine packing, with a harder start condition. New equipment leaves a controlled factory clean state. Used equipment may carry leaked oils, missing covers, damaged paint, worn lifting interfaces and active corrosion. Sealing dirty or wet surfaces under VCI or barrier free volume traps failure chemistry. The ocean system cannot fix a skipped survey.

Why used equipment needs its own method notes

Method notes for used units must state condition assumptions that new-equipment notes take for granted. List known leaks, missing covers, existing rust zones, residual fluid state, battery state and any non-OEM lift adapters. Goods-in at the receiving plant needs to know what was pre-existing and what the pack was designed to protect.

Never assume factory oil films still protect metal. Never assume paint is continuous. Never assume ways are free of chips. The clean gate is a pass/fail checklist, not a hope.

Photo evidence before the bag closes

Used machinery claims often argue about pre-existing damage. Photograph critical surfaces and existing defects before packing starts. Then photograph immobilisation, free volume close, desiccant placement, sealed barrier, closed case and lift setup. Keep packing lists, method notes and wood compliance evidence with the file.

On-site reality

Decommissioned plant and on-site packing

Many used units are packed where they stand after decommissioning. Crane windows are limited. Floors may be dirty. Power may be limited. Plan clean gate and seal when the unit is dry. Protect free volume from site dust and weather. Do not rush seal to meet a truck appointment if the clean gate fails.

What the used-machine condition survey must capture

Walk the machine with camera and notebook before any timber is cut. Capture leaks, missing covers, loose assemblies, existing rust zones, damaged paint, worn lifting eyes, non-OEM adapters, residual fluid levels, battery state and serial plates. Note on-site access: crane reach, floor loading, concurrent production and bay weather.

If OEM packing drawings are missing, photograph axes before and after lock. Tag residual oils that must remain so destination knows intentional preservation versus contamination.

Do not seal wet chemistry under free volume on used machines

Used machines often look oily-protected when they are simply dirty. Free oil pools, coolant residues, chip beds and condensation from cold machines in warm halls all fail the clean gate. Wipe critical faces touch-dry. Remove loose corrosion that becomes abrasive under wrap. Cap open ports. Only then apply multimetal VCI free volume.

If a truck appointment forces a seal before clean gate passes, stop and document the fail. Rework beats a marine claim on capital equipment that left wet.
