1. Clean and dry parts

Coolant, swarf and fingerprints become corrosion sites inside sealed bags. Clean before pack.

Automotive CKD and SKD programmes often require packaging materials that have passed OEM evaluation pathways for corrosion protection and process cleanliness. When an OEM cleanliness path forbids oil, the corrosion stack must be VCI-led and dry-pack disciplined. When oil is still allowed, oil and VCI must be designed as a compatible system, not stacked by habit. Trust language: certifications and OEM approvals.

Volume ramp

Pilot kit method before series production

Series CKD packing should not be invented on the first volume container. A pilot kit locks protection, cube, labels and plant goods-in acceptance before freight economics are optimised hard.

1. BOM freeze for pilot

Pack against a controlled bill of material revision. Do not pilot a moving kit list.

2. Metal and cleanliness map

List bare metals, coatings, oil-free rules and cavity parts before choosing VCI grades.

3. Module design

Define bag, tray, carton and outer case hierarchy. Standardise footprints for container planning.

4. Moisture trial logic

For critical kits, define barrier free volume and desiccant units for the longest planned ocean + storage dwell.

5. Photo and method pack

6. Destination plant trial

7. Cube review

Only after protection and plant acceptance are stable, tighten nest and fill for freight cost.

Any BOM, metal or plant rule change reopens the pilot method. Do not silent-edit volume packs.

Why pilots beat “copy last supplier’s pack”

Last supplier may have shipped shorter routes, different metal mixes or oil-allowed plants. Ocean humidity, OEM VCI pathways and destination cleanliness are programme-specific. Copying timber dimensions without copying the interior climate and label system is how kits rust or stop lines.
