What is the difference between CKD and SKD packaging?
CKD packs fully disassembled kits with many small packages and high labelling complexity. SKD packs partially assembled modules with fewer, often heavier packages. Both need ocean-grade corrosion and moisture design when shipped by sea.
Do CKD kits need VCI if parts are oiled?
It depends on OEM process. Many plants reject oily receipt. Where oil-free clean pack is required, VCI systems replace or reduce oil. Where oil is allowed, VCI and oil must be compatible by design.
Is ISPM-15 required for CKD pallets?
Solid wood packaging material in international trade generally requires ISPM-15 treatment and marking. Plastic or fully engineered alternatives may change the wood layer, but any solid wood still needs compliance.
How do packing lists work for CKD?
Case-level and often bag-level identification is required so assembly plants can reconcile kits. See the export packing list guide.
Can one barrier bag cover an entire CKD pallet?
Sometimes for homogeneous kits. Mixed kits often need part-level bags plus outer unitisation. Design free volume and desiccant for the sealed zone you actually create.
How is SKD different from packing a complete machine?
SKD modules still need immobilisation and moisture control, but package count and assembly interfaces differ from a single CBU machine crate.
Do OEM VCI approvals apply to wooden crates?
No. OEM VCI pathways evaluate corrosion packaging materials. Wood compliance is a separate phytosanitary layer.
What is the biggest cost error in CKD packaging?
Optimising only for container fill while under-protecting metal. Corrosion rework and line stops usually dwarf freight savings.
Should every CKD part get an aluminium barrier bag?
No. Critical bare-metal kits and long humid routes often justify barrier free volumes. Many parts are correctly packed in VCI film bags inside strong unit modules. Design sealed zones you can size desiccant for; do not create fake “barrier†packs with poly that still breathes freely over multi-week ocean legs.
How do returnable systems change ocean CKD packing?
Returnables can improve cube and handling, but they still need dry, clean interiors, corrosion method for metal, contamination control on reverse loops and phytosanitary rules if solid wood is used. Returnable is a logistics choice, not a substitute for moisture and corrosion design.
What should a pilot kit photo pack show?
Bare part condition, bagging and interleave, desiccant placement if used, seal method, outer unit marks, packing list snapshot and container or pallet as loaded. Destination plant should be able to open the kit without inventing a second method.
How do CKD packing lists differ from machine packing lists?
Machine lists often track few cases with high mass. CKD lists track many lines, kit IDs, BOM revisions and bag or tray identities. Mis-picks stop assembly lines. See the export packing list guide.
