Closed timber is not airtight

It requires approved treatment (commonly heat treatment) and official IPPC marks so inspectors can verify reduced pest risk. A stronger crate does not reduce the need for VCI or desiccant. Strength and climate solve different failure modes. Specifying only “export wooden crate” without interior layers is an incomplete system.

Centre of gravity first

Mark CG and design braces around tip geometry. A heavy base under an eccentric turret or headstock still tips if the CG mark is wrong and lift is off-centre.

Hard points only

Never brace into machine covers, glass, thin sheet metal or cable trays. Find OEM hard points or design temporary shipping fixtures approved by the machine owner.

Wood moisture vs metal

Green or wet timber against bare metal is a corrosion accelerator. Use dry compliant wood and isolation layers. See container rain.

Barrier protection

Blocking hardware must not tear aluminium barrier film. Round edges, use soft pads where straps cross bags, and complete seal after immobilisation checks.

Handling design

Lift geometry: forklift, crane and multipoint abuse

Most structural crate damage happens at plants and terminals, not from steady ship roll alone. Design for the lift methods that will actually touch the unit.

Fork pockets / clear entry Pocket size, entry length and under-clearance must match available forklifts. Partial fork insertion under heavy mass bends skids.
