Export Packing and Crating

Export packing and crating as one engineered system

Crating is structure. Packing is free volume, moisture, corrosion control and documentation. Ocean freight fails when those jobs are purchased separately and never designed as one sealed life.

Packing is not a synonym for a wooden box

Export packing and crating are searched together because industrial buyers need both. The crate or skid carries mass and accepts forklifts and cranes. The packing system keeps metal dry of free water, closed against vapour-phase corrosion risk and identifiable at goods-in. A perfect ISPM-15 crate with open free volume still ships rust risk. A perfect VCI bag without immobilisation still ships mechanical risk.

Design choices

Closed case, open crate or skid

Closed case: maximum weather shell and access control for sensitive or high-value units. Open crate: lower mass and ventilation when a separate weather system covers the free volume. Skid or base: for heavy geometry when wrap and barrier systems form the climate shell and the base carries handling loads. Choice follows mass, centre of gravity, lift method, weather exposure and ocean weeks, not habit.

Solid wood packaging material used internationally generally requires treatment and IPPC marking under ISPM-15 when the destination enforces the standard. Processed wood such as many plywood constructions can fall outside solid-wood WPM rules; confirm per construction and destination. See the ISPM-15 export packaging guide and ISPM-15 certified export crates.

Technical FAQs

Direct answers for packaging engineers, quality and export teams.

What is the difference between packing and crating?
Crating is the structural enclosure or skid. Packing is preservation, free volume, moisture control, cushioning, marks and documentation around that structure.
Does every export need a closed wooden crate?
No. Skids, open crates and closed cases are selected by mass, weather exposure, handling and ocean weeks.
What wood rule applies in international trade?
Solid wood packaging material thicker than 6 mm generally requires ISPM-15 treatment and the IPPC mark when the destination enforces the standard.
Why do packs fail after a correct crate is built?
Usually open free volume, dirty seal, under-counted sealed life or torn film at edges during handling.
Should lashing be designed with the pack?
Yes. Restow and lashing forces tear weak free volume if the climate system is not protected.
What belongs on the packing list?
Kit and case IDs matching physical marks, quantities, masses and package types so goods-in can reconcile without opening every free volume.
How do organisational ISO certificates fit?
They support process consistency. They do not replace product grade evidence or ISPM-15 marks on wood.
When is aluminium barrier required?
When sealed life includes multi-week ocean humidity after warehouse and terminal dwell.
