What heavy equipment crating actually means

Heavy equipment crating is the engineered combination of a load-rated base or case, immobilisation of moving axes, dry-clean corrosion free volume, multi-week moisture design when ocean humidity applies, handling marks and a packing method note. The cargo may be a CNC, press, generator, transformer, pump skid, process module or production cell. Mass may range from a few tonnes to well beyond what a pack house can receive through a standard door. The method still follows the same physics: ship motion finds free play; humidity finds bare metal; border rules find unmarked solid wood.

Mass, centre of gravity and lift path

Heavy equipment crating fails when bases flex, lift points tear or free volume rips during ship motion. Survey mass, centre of gravity, lifting eyes, forklift pockets, residual fluids, loose covers and precision surfaces before any timber is cut. Document the lift plan. Do not invent lift points that the machine was not designed for. Do not bolt into sheet metal skins or cosmetic panels and call it structure.

Estimate dynamic factors for road, rail, vessel and terminal handling. A pack designed only for static floor mass will under-brace for ship motion. When centre of gravity is high or offset, bracing and base width must respond. When only one end may be forked, marks and pockets must force that behaviour. Unmarked heavy cases invite improvised lifts at terminals worldwide.

ISPM-15 is phytosanitary control for solid wood packaging material. It is not climate control and not a substitute for VCI free volume. Organisational ISO 9001 / ISO 14001 support process consistency; they do not replace product grade evidence or lift engineering.

Structure types

Skid, open crate, closed case or ODC frame

Skid or base only: for extreme mass or plant roll-out when wrap and barrier systems form the climate shell and the base carries handling loads. Common on large machines that cannot fit a full closed shell without modular breakdown.

Open crate: lower mass and visual inspection paths. Needs a deliberate weather and corrosion system for ocean legs. Good when access or ventilation matters and free volume is engineered separately.

Closed wooden case: maximum weather shell and access control for sensitive or high-value units. Still needs internal immobilisation and climate free volume. Wood walls alone do not replace desiccant unit design.

ODC / flat-rack frames: when dimensions exceed standard container envelopes. Weather exposure rises. See over-dimensional cargo packing.

On-site reality

When the pack house cannot receive the unit

Many heavy units are packed at the plant. On-site packing uses the same technical gates. Space, crane time, weather, floor loading and concurrent production become process constraints. Schedule clean gate and seal when the unit is dry. Protect free volume from site dust and rain during work. Photograph stages while access still exists.

What a technical RFQ should put in writing

Mass and outline. Centre of gravity estimate. Lift method (fork, crane, both). Metal list and plating. Axis lock requirements. Residual fluid state. Origin hold days, terminal dwell assumption and ocean weeks. Mode (container, flat-rack, break-bulk). Destination wood packaging rules. Lock kinematics before long vibration

Ship roll, pitch and terminal handling find free play on heavy equipment. Lock slides, gantries, quills, rams, turrets and rotating assemblies using OEM positions when available. Back off spring loads only when the procedure allows. Bag loose tooling, splash guards and doors with labels. Record lock positions so the receiving plant can reverse them without scoring ways.

Soft foam under a multi-tonne bed is not immobilisation. Blocking must carry load into the skid. Film protects surfaces; timber and steel take force. If the unit rocks on a level floor after anchoring, the load path is incomplete and free volume will tear under motion.

Common mistakes

Why strong timber still fails on heavy units

Perfect ISPM-15 cases still fail when free volume is open, clean gate is skipped, axes are unlocked, desiccant is guessed, or lashing uses film as the load path. Timber quality does not fix climate design. Climate materials do not fix a flexing base. Structure, immobilisation, corrosion free volume and moisture design must all pass before release.

Relocated or second-hand heavy units need a harder survey (fluids, existing damage, worn lift eyes). Use used machinery export packing when history is incomplete.
