Why packing adequacy appears in claim conversations

Ocean transit is a harsh environment. When cargo arrives damaged, parties investigate proximate cause. Packaging is one frequent line of inquiry because many voyage hazards are foreseeable: condensation (container rain), corrosion of bare metal, tip and impact at terminals, and load shift if restraint is weak. Exact policy exclusions and burden of proof depend on the contract and jurisdiction. Packaging engineers still control whether the pack was planned for those ordinary hazards.

“Seaworthy packing” often functions as a commercial phrase meaning “pack suitably for sea.” Without defined moisture performance, corrosion method, structure class and documentation, different packers will interpret it differently. After a moisture claim, a label without a method is a weak factual record. Define the system. After a loss: preserve packaging

Do not scrap damaged cases, bags or dunnage until surveyors and underwriters instruct. Photograph as-found damage, keep serial numbers readable, and follow notice timelines in your commercial and insurance process. This is operational hygiene, not a promise that any claim will be paid.

Free water sealed inside a perfect bag is a design failure, not bad luck.

Packing quality and who pays for packing are related commercial topics, not the same topic. Export engineers reduce claim friction by writing scope clearly even when lawyers own the final contract reading.

Who designs the pack?

State whether seller, buyer or a named packing house owns the method note, materials and photo pack.

Who pays for climate layers?

VCI, barrier and desiccant are not free upgrades. Price them as system lines so they are not stripped in “cheapest crate” bidding.

Where risk transfers

Incoterms affect delivery and cost allocation. They do not magically make a vague “seaworthy packing” phrase into a complete method. Specify layers regardless of term.

CTU packing ownership

Case packing and container packing can be different contracts. A perfect case can still fail under bad stowage if unit packing is out of scope and poorly done by others.
