A single or twin-screw extruder is built around a hardened, ground screw running inside a barrel with a radial clearance often under half a millimetre, a clearance set to control melt pressure and output consistency. On machines with a high length-to-diameter ratio, common on modern extrusion lines, that screw is a long, heavy, unsupported shaft, and if it is left resting on its own weight through weeks of road and sea transit it can develop a permanent sag that drags against the barrel bore the moment the machine restarts, scoring both parts before anyone notices the cause.
Around that sits a second, more fragile risk: the ceramic or mica-insulated heater bands clamped around the barrel are brittle and crack under impact or crush, and on blow moulding machines the mould halves carry a precision cavity surface that chips exactly like a die if it contacts anything hard.
