Why Heavy Machinery Fails in Transit

A capital machine that runs flawlessly on your shop floor can arrive overseas seized, rusted or misaligned for reasons that have nothing to do with how it was built. The failure vectors are always the same three: corrosion, mechanical shock, and non-compliance.

A 40-foot container crossing the equatorial Pacific or the Gulf of Aden cycles through condensation events that repeatedly drive the relative humidity around bare steel above 80% across a six-week voyage, enough to bloom red rust on precision-ground slideways and spindles within days. Road and sea handling then subject the same machine to repeated shock and vibration that shears unbraced castings, cracks gearboxes and knocks spindles out of alignment.

Compliance is the third and most overlooked failure. Any solid-wood crate entering a signatory country must carry a valid ISPM-15 heat-treatment stamp, or the entire consignment can be quarantined, fumigated at the port, re-exported or destroyed, turning a packaging shortcut into a five-figure demurrage bill.

BENZ Packaging engineers against all three vectors with a single coordinated system: VCI vapour-phase corrosion inhibition, vacuum aluminium-barrier preservation, calculated cushioning and bracing, and heat-treated seaworthy crating built to the machine rather than to a template.

Heavy Machinery Packaging FAQs

The basics

What is heavy machinery packaging?

Heavy machinery packaging is specialised packaging that protects industrial machines from corrosion, moisture, shock, vibration and non-compliance during handling, storage and transport. Unlike ordinary packing it is engineered to the machine's weight, centre of gravity and shipping route, using heat-treated crates and skids, VCI anti-corrosion materials, desiccants and calculated load securing.

Why does heavy machinery need special packaging?

Machines are heavy, high-value, precision-aligned and often bare metal. Ordinary packaging cannot carry the weight, cannot stop rust over a long humid voyage, and cannot brace a multi-tonne load against shock. The result of getting it wrong is a machine that arrives seized, rusted or misaligned, and a rejected shipment.

What is the difference between domestic and export machinery packaging?

Domestic packing mainly guards against shock and handling on a short road trip. Export or seaworthy packing adds ISPM-15 heat-treated crating, VCI corrosion protection, desiccant moisture control and load securing to survive weeks at sea and clear customs.

What is seaworthy machinery packaging?

Seaworthy machinery packaging is engineered to survive an ocean voyage: a heat-treated ISPM-15 crate, corrosion and moisture protection sized to the route, and bracing that holds the machine through sea motion and container stacking for the full transit.

Materials and methods

What materials are used to pack heavy machinery?

Heat-treated timber for crates and skids, plywood, VCI films and paper, aluminium barrier foil, desiccants, foam and rubber vibration pads, steel and polyester strapping, and moisture-proof covers, selected to the machine and the route.

What is the difference between a wooden crate, a skid and a pallet for machinery?

A skid is an engineered base the machine is bolted to for lifting and stability. A crate fully encloses the machine for weather and side-impact protection. A pallet is a simpler base for lighter, stackable loads. Heavy export machines often need a skid inside a crate.

What is a heavy-duty skid?

A heavy-duty skid is an engineered timber base built to the machine's weight and centre of gravity, with defined forklift and crane lifting points, used for very heavy items such as oilfield pumps, turbine rotors, transformers and presses.

How is machinery protected from rust during shipping?

With VCI volatile corrosion inhibitor film and paper that release a protective vapour onto every metal surface, rust-preventive coatings on machined faces, and for long or humid transits a sealed aluminium barrier bag with desiccant that holds humidity below the point at which corrosion can start.

What is vacuum barrier or aluminium foil packing for machines?

The machine is sealed inside an aluminium barrier-foil envelope with desiccant, creating a moisture-proof cocoon that keeps internal humidity low for months. It is used for sea freight and long-term storage of moisture-sensitive machines.

How many desiccants does a machine package need?

The quantity is calculated by the DIN 55474 method from the enclosed volume, the packing materials inside and the transit duration, not guessed. BENZ sizes it for each shipment so the package neither under-protects nor over-spends.

What is lashing and chocking, or blocking and bracing?

It is securing the machine so it cannot move in any direction inside its crate or the container, using timber bracing, chocks and lashings. Container securing is inspected at ports, and inadequate securing can have a container offloaded and re-secured at the shipper's cost.

How do you prevent shock and vibration damage to machinery?

With calculated cushioning, anti-vibration mounts, immobilisation of moving assemblies and load-path bracing engineered to the machine, so it cannot shift or resonate under handling, road and sea loads.

How do you prevent container rain or condensation inside the packaging?

With container desiccants sized by the DIN 55473 and 55474 method, moisture barriers and, where needed, a sealed barrier bag, so condensation cannot form and drip onto the machine during temperature swings at sea.

Compliance and standards

What is ISPM-15 and does my machine crate need it?

ISPM-15 is the international phytosanitary standard for solid-wood packaging used in cross-border trade. Any solid-wood crate, skid or dunnage bound for a signatory country must be heat-treated and carry the ISPM-15 stamp, or the shipment can be quarantined, fumigated, re-exported or destroyed.

What does the ISPM-15 stamp mean?

The ISPM-15 stamp shows the IPPC symbol, the country code, the treatment facility number and the treatment code, HT for heat treatment, certifying the wood was treated to kill pests. BENZ crates carry the stamp and we supply the treatment certificate with the shipment.

Do all countries require ISPM-15 for wooden packaging?

Most trading nations enforce ISPM-15, with minor variations, some destinations also require fumigation proof. BENZ packs to the destination country's rules and provides the documentation so the consignment clears customs.

What documents come with export machinery packing?

The packing list, the ISPM-15 heat-treatment certificate, and handling and case markings, supplied so the consignment moves cleanly through customs without quarantine or port fumigation.

What standards does BENZ follow for machinery packaging?

ISPM-15 for solid wood, MIL-STD-2073 for methods of preservation and packing, MIL-PRF-3420H for VCI materials, MIL-D-3464E for desiccants, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 management systems, plus BFSV and TRGS 615 verification of nitrite-free VCI chemistry and IIP validation.

The process

How is a machine packed for export, step by step?

Survey and disassembly, surface degreasing and VCI preservation, vacuum barrier bagging with desiccant for long transits, calculated cushioning and bracing, ISPM-15 seaworthy crating, and finally containerisation, lashing and documentation, all performed as one engineered sequence.

Do you pack machinery on site at our factory?

Yes. On-site packing is the standard BENZ method for heavy machinery. A team travels to your plant with all VCI materials, crating timber, tooling and lifting equipment and packs the machine on your shop floor, so it never travels unprotected to an external packer.

Do you handle disassembly, dismantling and reinstallation?

Yes. For large machines and full production lines BENZ manages controlled disassembly with full labelling and a reassembly map, and can support reinstallation at the destination so the machine is returned to running condition.

How long does it take to pack a heavy machine?

It depends on the machine's size, the disassembly required and the protection level, from about a day for a single machine to a phased programme for a full production line. BENZ schedules the work to your dispatch date.

Do you provide machine relocation and plant shifting?

Yes. BENZ handles machinery preservation, packing and relocation, including sequenced moves of complete production lines with labelling and reassembly support.

Capability

What is the heaviest machine BENZ can pack and ship?

There is effectively no upper limit for our crating and on-site teams. BENZ routinely packs units from 500 kg precision machines to transformers and turbines well above 100 tonnes, engineering the skid, crate and lifting points to the machine's weight and centre of gravity.

Which types of machines can BENZ pack?

CNC and machining centres, lathes, mills, presses, injection moulding machines, transformers, turbines, boilers, compressors, generators and DG sets, MRI and medical equipment, printing machines, conveyors, tanks and vessels, industrial pumps and chillers, and complete production lines.

Do you pack machinery for sea, air and road freight?

Yes, all three modes, with the packaging engineered to the transport mode and the route so the machine is protected end to end.

Do you provide heavy machinery packaging across India?

Yes. BENZ provides on-site heavy machinery packaging across major industrial cities and corridors nationwide, including Delhi NCR, Pune, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Ludhiana, Indore and more, and handles export from all major Indian ports. Beyond India, BENZ also exports and ships heavy machinery packaging worldwide, with export experience spanning 100+ countries across Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and the Americas, and on-site support wherever the shipment requires it.

Cost

How much does heavy machinery packaging cost?

It is quoted per machine. The cost is driven by the machine's weight and size, the protection level needed such as VCI, desiccant and barrier bagging, the crate versus skid choice, any disassembly, and the destination's requirements. BENZ surveys the machine and quotes to the exact requirement.

What affects the cost of export crating for machinery?

The machine's weight and dimensions, the crate versus skid decision, the corrosion and moisture protection the route demands, disassembly, lifting requirements and the destination country's compliance rules.

How can I reduce machinery packing cost without risking damage?

By engineering the packaging to the actual risk rather than over-packing or under-packing: right-sized crates, the correct protection level for the route, and consolidated handling. A single damage claim usually dwarfs any saving from under-packing.

Is professional machinery packing worth it compared with doing it in-house?

For heavy, high-value export machines, yes. A single container-rain or shock event can write off cargo worth many times the packing cost, and non-compliant wood can trigger port penalties. Engineered professional packing removes those risks.

Choosing a partner

How do I choose a heavy machinery packaging company?

Look for in-house materials and engineering rather than just a crate maker, ISPM-15 capability, genuine corrosion and moisture expertise, on-site execution, OEM and export references, and recognised certifications. An integrated provider that owns the whole system is far more dependable than a single-service packer.

Why choose BENZ for machinery packaging?

BENZ is an integrated provider that manufactures its own VCI and desiccant materials, engineers the crating, and packs on site, and it is trusted by 300 plus global OEMs including BMW, Volkswagen, Daimler, GM, Renault-Nissan and Volvo, exporting to more than 100 countries. That depth is something a single-service packer cannot match.

What happens if machinery is damaged in transit?

Properly engineered packing is designed to prevent damage in the first place. BENZ packs to prevent corrosion, moisture and shock damage and documents the packing so responsibility is clear, and advises on packaging that supports insurance and claims.
