An EDM machine ships with a problem most crating firms never plan for: a dielectric tank that must be fully drained and declared before it can leave the plant, a servo head set to micron gap control, and, on sinker machines, graphite or copper electrodes that chip like glass. A sinker EDM machine's work tank holds a hydrocarbon-based dielectric oil, a flammable liquid that cannot travel in the tank and must be fully drained, the tank purged, and the machine declared clean before it is packed, or the shipment gets flagged and held at origin or destination customs as undeclared hazmat. A wire EDM machine instead runs deionised water through a filtration and resin-bed system that, if left wet, corrodes the brass wire guides, the flushing nozzles and the tank internals from the inside where nobody sees it until the buyer opens the machine.
Underneath that fluid problem sits a precision one. The Z-axis servo head positions the electrode to a gap measured in microns, and on sinker machines the electrodes themselves, graphite or oxygen-free copper, are machined to the cavity's exact form and chip or crack if they knock against anything harder than foam. BENZ drains and certifies the machine clean, protects the servo head and guides, and cases the electrodes as separate precision tooling, exactly as we do with the hobs on a gear machine.
The work tank, filtration unit, resin bed and all fluid lines are fully drained, and on sinker machines flushed to remove residual oil, so the machine ships dry and can be honestly declared on the export paperwork with no hazmat exposure at customs.
Graphite and copper electrodes are wrapped individually and packed in slotted foam tool cases so cavity-form edges never contact anything hard; the wire spool and guide assemblies on wire EDM machines are secured against unwinding and shock.
The Z-axis head, worktable and tank interior are preserved with VCI vapour-phase protection to MIL-PRF-3420H, the control and generator cabinet is cushioned against its own mass, and the assembly is sealed in a moisture barrier envelope with desiccant for sea freight.
