Electric Motor & Gearbox Packaging

A motor's rotor does not have to move to be damaged. Left unbraced on a stationary shaft, the vibration of a long road or sea transit hammers each bearing ball into the same point on the race over and over, a failure called false brinelling that leaves a row of tiny dents invisible until the motor runs and starts to whine or fail early. BENZ locks the shaft and rotor before transit, not after damage is done.

The challenge

Stationary damage is real damage. It just shows up later.

Bearing failure accounts for roughly half of all motor failures, and a meaningful share of that starts in transit, not in service. A rotor resting on its own bearings during a multi-week road-and-sea journey transmits every vibration straight through the balls or rollers to the same fixed contact point on the race, since nothing is rotating to spread that load around. The result is false brinelling, a pattern of tiny indentations that increases running noise and shortens bearing life from the first day the motor turns, and it is entirely preventable with a proper transport lock on the shaft.

Winding insulation carries its own risk: motor windings absorb ambient moisture, and a motor shipped without protection can arrive with insulation resistance too low to safely energise until it has been dried out, a delay nobody budgets for. Gearboxes add a third: oil that is fine running at operating temperature can leak, foam or contaminate breather seals if shipped full and unsecured. BENZ locks the shaft on every motor that needs it, protects windings from moisture, and drains or secures gearbox oil correctly before anything is crated.

Bearings, windings and oil, each handled correctly

Lock the shaft and rotor

On motors large enough to need it, the shaft is blocked against the coupling end or frame with a transport lock so the rotor cannot vibrate against its own bearings and cause false brinelling, the specific failure mode standard crating misses.

Protect windings against moisture

Bearing cavities are packed with compatible grease to exclude moisture and contamination, and the motor is sealed in a moisture-barrier envelope with desiccant so winding insulation resistance stays within a safe range for direct energising on arrival.

Drain or secure gearbox oil correctly

Gearbox oil is drained or brought to the correct shipping level per the manufacturer's transport specification, and breathers and seals are protected so oil cannot leak or foam and contaminate seals in transit.

Preserve exposed surfaces, skid and crate

Shafts, flanges and machined faces are VCI protected to MIL-PRF-3420H, and the unit is mounted on an engineered skid inside a heat-treated ISPM-15 crate.

How do you pack an electric motor for export?

We fit a transport lock to the shaft on motors large enough to need it, pack bearing cavities with compatible grease and seal the motor in a moisture-barrier envelope with desiccant to protect winding insulation, preserve exposed shafts and flanges with VCI, then mount it on an engineered skid inside a heat-treated ISPM-15 crate.

What is bearing brinelling and why does it matter for shipping?

False brinelling is a pattern of tiny indentations on a bearing race caused by vibration hammering the balls or rollers into the same fixed point while the shaft is stationary, exactly what happens to an unbraced motor over a long transit. Are your motor and gearbox crates ISPM-15 compliant?

Yes. All solid-wood crating and skidding is heat-treated and ISPM-15 stamped, with the treatment certificate supplied for customs clearance without quarantine or fumigation.
