What Is VCI Film, and Why Does Salem's Steel Belt Need It?
VCI film is polyethylene packaging impregnated with volatile corrosion inhibitors. Inside a sealed bag, sheet or wrap the inhibitors form a dry vapour that settles on metal surfaces, including recesses oil cannot coat evenly. When the pack is opened, the vapour leaves. Parts stay clean for inspection, further processing or OEM assembly. No greasy film. No wash line before the next operation.
Global VCI brands explain that chemistry well, but Salem's risk is local. Hot dry spells from March to May push daytime highs near 40 C, then cooler nights and the October to December monsoon raise warehouse humidity. Carbon steel blanks, stainless edges, machined special-steel bars and cast iron surfaces condensate inside ordinary polythene. That is why foundry and engineering buyers here still lose claims on "clean" packs that sat only a few weeks. BENZ multimetal VCI film is specified for that inland Tamil Nadu cycle, not for a generic coastal brochure.
