What flat-rack packing is and is not

A flat-rack is a cargo transport unit with a strong floor and, depending on type, fixed or collapsible ends and open sides. Machinery packing for flat-racks is not "put the crate on a special container." It is a packaging and securing design that uses the CTU floor as the primary structure, keeps mass and centre of gravity inside safe envelopes, provides lashing geometry the vessel and terminal can use, and applies weather and corrosion controls that do not rely on a closed dry box.

Bolting, cradles and load spread on the CTU floor

Machinery should transfer load into the flat-rack floor through structural feet, steel beams or engineered timber cradles that spread concentrated loads. Point loads from small machine pads can damage floors and create tip risk. Design shims and load-spread plates where needed. Bolting into cargo structure must use OEM-approved points or engineered adapters; never drill randomly into pressure vessels, rails or precision beds.

Friction alone is not a securing system for heavy machinery on ocean voyages. Combine positive restraint (bolts, welded stops where authorised by the CTU owner and method, chocks) with lashings. Document torque, thread locker policy and whether bolts are temporary for voyage only. Protect paint and free volume where bolt heads and washers sit.

Designing lashing paths that do not destroy the pack

Lashings from corner fittings and floor eyes to cargo strong points must clear free volume bags, weather skins and fragile instruments. Add sacrificial wear pads, edge protectors and designated lash rings on cradles. Method notes should show preferred lash angles and forbidden choke points. If stevedores can only find a sheet-metal cover to choke a chain, they will, and the corrosion system will fail first.

Coordinate with the carrier OOG desk early. Packaging that ignores published securing preferences gets reworked on the quay. Weather and spray

Weather systems for open-sided CTUs

Open sides admit rain, spray and UV. Weather systems for flat-rack machinery typically combine engineered covers, sealed free volume on metal surfaces where possible, drain paths so water does not pond against seals, and UV-stable materials for yard dwell. Tarpaulins alone without a free volume strategy leave condensation and salt on bare steel under the cover.

Design cover attachment so wind does not sail the fabric into rotating assemblies or sharp edges. Provide inspection flaps only if re-entry mid-voyage or multiport checks are planned; otherwise keep sealed integrity. Sealed free volume versus weather cover only

Write two columns on every flat-rack method note: surfaces under closed free volume (film, paper systems, barrier bags) and surfaces under weather cover only. Buyers who pay for "full VCI" but receive only a tarp have no audit trail. Clean gate still applies before any free volume: salt, cutting fluid and road film under a bag become a corrosion cell.

Immobilising moving axes on an open CTU

Ocean motion, yard towing and rail transfer all excite unlocked axes. Rotating tables, rams, booms and sliding carriages must be locked with OEM transport locks or engineered braces that load into structure, not into cladding. Flat-racks in the container system remain subject to verified gross mass processes. Shipper remains responsible for VGM.
