When project cargo packing replaces standard FCL crating

Project cargo and breakbulk packing applies when industrial units are too long, too heavy, too tall or too sensitive for a routine containerised crate programme, or when the logistics plan deliberately uses heavy-lift vessels, multipurpose ships, barges, flat-racks or roll-on methods. The packaging job expands beyond a closed box: it must support lift, temporary storage, possible deck weather, sea fastening attachment and multipiece reconnection at destination.

Breakbulk does not cancel phytosanitary rules for solid wood packaging material. Skids, cradles, temporary dunnage and packing timber still need ISPM-15 treatment and IPPC marks where enforced: ISPM 15 requirements. The stamp still does not design weather covers or lift points.

Survey first

Engineering survey before timber is cut

Project packing begins with a survey, not a saw. Capture shipping mass, centre of gravity estimate method, lifting points and SWL assumptions, prohibited lift zones, jacking points, residual fluids, hazardous residues, dimensional envelope including protrusions, disassembly options, and destination reassembly sequence. Used equipment hardens the survey: corrosion baseline photos, missing guards, oil leaks and undocumented repairs change cradle design.

Lift geometry is packaging geometry

A cradle that interferes with certified lift points is a failed pack even if the paint looks neat. Packaging design must preserve sling angles, spreader requirements, soft points and clearance for hooks. Temporary packing beams may be part of the packaging scope when OEM lift points are unsuitable after partial dismantling. Document who certifies the lift arrangement and whether packaging-added hardware is temporary or permanent.

Never use thin crate lids or decorative timber as lift members. Load paths for lift must run through structural steel or engineered timber members sized for the dynamic factors the lift plan assumes. Mark keep-clear zones on the weather cover so stevedores do not cut into free volume to invent a new padeye.

Sea fastening

Sea fastening interfaces packers must design for

On multipurpose and heavy-lift vessels, cargo is secured with chains, wires, webbings and welded stoppers according to the vessel securing plan. Packaging creates or destroys workable attachment. Provide structural contact faces, documented allowable lash angles, and protection so lashings do not cut weather covers or crush free volume. Coordinate early with the freight forwarder or heavy-lift operator; last-minute timber blocking against painted cladding is not a securing system.

Corrosion on open modes

Free volume and barrier strategy when the unit cannot be a sealed box

Some project units cannot accept a full aluminium barrier free volume because of size, heat, vents or continuous structural exposure. That does not mean bare steel. Options include sectional barrier bags on critical subassemblies, multimetal VCI wraps under weather covers, emitter strategies in enclosures, sacrificial coatings only where specified by OEM, and desiccant inside sealed compartments. Write what is sealed and what is only weather-covered.

Packing multipiece plant and line relocations

Production line moves generate dozens to hundreds of packages: main frames, conveyors, cabinets, cable drums, tooling and spare kits. Breakbulk or mixed mode plans fail when identity collapses. Every package needs a durable case ID matching the packing list, contents description, mass, and often a reassembly stage code. Photo stages before dismantling protect both parties when destination teams claim missing pieces that never left the origin plant.

How project packs fail in the field

Domestic crates on deck voyages tear and flood. Unlocked rotating assemblies walk and destroy bearings. Lashings through non-structural covers crush free volume and then the cover fails. Missing multipiece IDs create destination delays that look like packing defects. Under-counted yard dwell exhausts desiccant in sealed subsections mid-voyage. Claims files without photo stages become argument rather than evidence.

Wood and dunnage

Solid wood packaging material on project sites

Project sites generate large volumes of temporary timber. Only compliant solid wood packaging material should remain with the cargo into international legs. Scrap lumber used for temporary cribbing during jacking must be removed or replaced with marked WPM before voyage. Cradles built from solid timber need the same treatment and mark discipline as export crates. Hybrid steel-timber cradles still carry phytosanitary duty on the timber members.

VGM and container legs

When project moves still include container legs

Many project shipments mix breakbulk main units with containerised spares, cabinets and cabling. Container legs remain under SOLAS verified gross mass rules. Shipper remains responsible for VGM. Packers supply mass data for stuffed units as contracted. Do not let breakbulk drama erase container process discipline for the rest of the bill of materials.

Recommended execution sequence for a project pack

1. Survey and photo baseline. 2. Agree exposure class and voyage assumptions. 3. Design structure, lift preservation and securing interface. 4. Design free volume and weather layers by zone. 5. Source marked solid wood packaging material. 6. Clean gate and immobilise axes. 7. Apply free volume and weather system. 8. Mark packages and issue packing list. 9. Hand over securing interface note to logistics. 10. Archive photos and method note with case IDs.

Skipping early interface agreement with the heavy-lift operator is the most expensive sequencing error. Packaging that is "finished" but cannot be lashed or lifted will be cut open in the terminal, destroying climate controls you already paid for.
