How Does VCI Paper Work in Coastal Humidity?
VCI paper is kraft or specialty paper impregnated or coated with volatile corrosion inhibitors. When you interleave steel blanks, wrap fasteners or line a carton and keep free airflow limited (folded edges, taped folds, closed carton), inhibitor molecules vapourise into the air space, settle on metal and form a thin molecular layer. That layer interrupts corrosion driven by moisture, oxygen and salt contaminants. When the pack opens, the vapour leaves. Parts stay dry and clean with no greasy oil to strip before install or inspection.
Zerust and Cortec correctly stress fast vapour release from paper surface area, enclosed packs and clean dry metal before wrap. Armor stresses seal integrity for longer life. On the east coast the driver is stronger than inland monsoons alone: coastal salt air near Vizag Port and humid Odisha stores attack cut steel and Autonagar parts in open sheds. Laminated grades and tight outer cartons matter more here than on a dry plateau. VCI paper does not replace dry packing; it replaces greasy oil when clean receipt is required after humid storage and port dwell. For sealed large kits or aggressive ocean systems, pair paper with VCI film and desiccants.
