What Is VCI Paper and How Does It Prevent Corrosion?

VCI paper is kraft or specialty paper carrying volatile corrosion inhibitors that protect metal inside a closed package. The inhibitor vapor travels through the enclosed air space and forms a temporary molecular layer on exposed metal, including recesses and threads. When the package opens, the vapor dissipates and the part can move directly to inspection or assembly without removing heavy rust preventive oil.

VCI performance depends on correct use. Parts must be clean and dry; the paper must cover enough surface area; the outer carton, bag or crate liner must limit free airflow; and the chemistry must match the metals. Paper handles interleave and wrap. VCI film handles sealed bags and larger enclosures. Desiccants manage free moisture in container air. Strong export packs often use all three for different jobs.

Choose VCI Paper Using Four Inputs

1. Metal compatibility
Identify carbon steel, cast iron, stainless, aluminium, copper, brass, zinc and plated surfaces. Mixed-metal packs need a qualified multimetal grade.
2. Part geometry
Flat blanks and gears suit interleave. Irregular castings need crepe. Heavy or sharp parts need reinforced paper and edge protection.
3. Climate and storage
Short dry indoor cycles may use plain paper. Coastal, monsoon, rainy-season or long warehouse dwell usually shifts the choice toward laminated paper.
4. Logistics route
Domestic cartons, cross-border trailers, port CFS dwell, breakbulk crates and ocean containers require different outer closures and moisture control.

Paper, Film and Desiccants Have Different Jobs

VCI paper
Interleaves and wraps close to metal. High surface area supports vapor release and separates stacked faces.
VCI film
Creates sealed bags, pallet wraps and larger enclosures. Use when the package itself must retain the protective atmosphere.
Desiccants
Reduce free moisture in sealed air volume. They complement VCI but do not replace correct metal-facing protection.
