Mumbai and Navi Mumbai put metal next to the Arabian Sea, monsoon rain and dense logistics yards. Parts from TTC and Taloja often sit in Bhiwandi warehouses or wait near Nhava Sheva and JNPT under high humidity. VCI film protects mixed metals inside a sealed pack without leaving oily residue. For ocean export, film is still only the corrosion layer. Barrier free volume, desiccant, structure and documents complete the system when the sealed life includes port dwell and multi-week sea transit.
Mumbai is not only “humid.” Near-coast plants and yards combine high relative humidity with marine chloride exposure. Monsoon months add free water on metal, wet cardboard and open trailer risk. Those factors accelerate flash rust on carbon steel and staining on many plated finishes if packs stay open or if wet metal is sealed.

Marine spares often have irregular shapes, grease residues and outdoor staging. Process fabrications may include stainless, carbon steel and large free volumes. Film grade still follows the metal list. Format follows shape: shrink or wrap for large pieces, bags for kits, emitters for cavities. Never treat outdoor tarpaulin as a substitute for sealed VCI free volume.
Heavy process residues can block inhibitor contact and foul seals. Clean to the level your receipt plant allows. VCI is not a licence to pack dirty wet metal.
A pack designed for “fourteen days at sea” fails when metal already spent a humid week in Bhiwandi and three days at the terminal. Write sealed life as plant + warehouse + terminal + ocean + destination storage. That number drives desiccant and barrier decisions more than marketing protection-month claims.

Coastal humidity and salt air can start flash rust in hours on clean bare steel. A few days of open dwell near the coast is enough to damage machined faces before export packing even begins.
For multi-week bare-metal ocean legs, pair VCI with aluminium barrier free volume and sized desiccant. Film alone is the corrosion layer, not the full moisture system.
Multimetal VCI wrap or bags after clean dry preparation, plus emitters for cavities. Large fabrications may need shrink or wrap formats and outer structure for handling.
Assume higher RH and longer sealed life. Close free volume at the plant. Do not wait to “bag at the warehouse” if metal is already coastal-exposed.
They need the same metal-matched VCI logic, often with faster sealing because salt air exposure is immediate. Geometry and outdoor staging change format more than brand slogans.
VCI stretch helps pallet stability and vapour activity around cartons. Critical bare metal still needs sealed bags or wraps plus moisture design for ocean legs.
