What is VCI Paper?

VCI Paper is a specialized anti-corrosion packaging material made from kraft paper that is impregnated with Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) compounds. When placed near a metal surface inside any enclosed space, VCI paper releases invisible protective molecules that form a self-repairing barrier on the metal, preventing rust and oxidation without oils, greases, or coatings.

BENZ Packaging manufactures VCI paper using patented Propatech VCI Technology from Propagroup, Italy, delivering corrosion protection trusted by automotive OEMs, bearing manufacturers, steel service centers, and defense organizations across India and 20+ export markets.

How Does VCI Paper Work? The 3-Stage Process

VCI paper protects metals through a three-stage vapor-phase process that is fundamentally different from barrier methods like oils or waxes:

Stage 1: Vaporization

The VCI compounds embedded in the kraft paper have a carefully engineered vapor pressure. The moment the paper is placed inside a sealed or semi-sealed package — a poly bag, carton, crate, or container — these compounds begin emitting invisible, odorless VCI molecules into the surrounding airspace. Unlike oils that require direct contact, VCI molecules travel through air to reach every corner of the enclosure.

Stage 2: Adsorption

The airborne VCI molecules disperse throughout the entire enclosed volume and then bond (adsorb) onto every exposed metal surface they contact. This includes surfaces that are physically impossible to reach with liquid coatings: deep cavities, threaded holes, internal channels, hydraulic ports, and nested assemblies. The resulting protective layer is just 1–2 molecules thick — completely invisible to the naked eye.

Stage 3: Electrochemical Disruption

The molecular VCI layer acts as both a water repellent and an electrical insulator on the metal surface. This breaks the electrochemical circuit that drives corrosion: moisture (electrolyte) + oxygen (cathode reaction) + metal (anode reaction) = rust. By interrupting this circuit at the molecular level, VCI prevents rust formation entirely. When the package is opened, the VCI layer dissipates harmlessly within minutes, leaving zero residue on the part.

What Metals Can VCI Paper Protect?

Different VCI formulations protect different metals. BENZ VCI Paper is available in three grades:

GradeMetals Protected
Ferrous GradeCarbon steel, mild steel, stainless steel, cast iron, alloy steel
Non-Ferrous GradeAluminum, copper, brass, bronze, zinc, silver
Universal Multi-Metal GradeAll ferrous + non-ferrous metals simultaneously without galvanic interaction

VCI Paper vs Traditional Rust Preventive Oil

Many manufacturers still rely on rust preventive (RP) oils for corrosion protection. Here is how VCI paper compares:

FactorVCI PaperRust Preventive Oil
ApplicationWrap or place near metalSpray, dip, or brush onto surface
ResidueZero — ready to use immediatelyRequires degreasing before assembly
Complex ShapesVapor reaches all surfaces including internal cavitiesCannot reach enclosed or recessed areas
Labor CostLow — wrap and sealHigh — application + cleaning at both ends
EnvironmentalRecyclable, biodegradable, RoHS/REACHHazardous waste, VOC emissions

Types of VCI Paper by BENZ Packaging

BENZ Packaging offers four VCI paper variants to match different protection requirements:

  • VCI Plain Paper — Breathable, fastest VCI release, ideal for dry storage and interleaving. 55–65 GSM.
  • Poly Coated Laminated VCI Paper — PE moisture barrier for ocean freight and humid environments. 75–85 GSM.
  • VCI Crepe Paper — Stretchable, conformable, cushioning for complex shapes and bearings. 110–120 GSM.
  • VCI HD Reinforced Paper — Scrim-reinforced, MIL-PRF-3420H compliant for defense and heavy engineering. 135–180 GSM.

How to Use VCI Paper Correctly

  1. Clean and dry the metal parts. Remove loose debris, machining chips, and heavy oil deposits.
  2. Wrap or interleave with VCI paper. Ensure at least 50 mm overlap at all seams. For stacked parts, place one sheet between every layer.
  3. Seal the outer package. Use poly bags, stretch film, tape, or shrink wrap to trap VCI vapors inside the enclosed space.
  4. Keep VCI paper in direct air path to metal. Do not place plain plastic, foam, or non-VCI materials between the paper and the metal.
  5. Store between 5°C and 43°C. Avoid direct sunlight and proximity to open acid baths.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does VCI paper protect metals?
BENZ VCI Paper provides active protection for up to 3 years under standard warehouse conditions. With Poly Coated Laminated VCI Paper in sealed packaging with desiccants, protection extends to 5+ years.

Does VCI paper leave residue on metal?
No. The VCI molecular layer is invisible and dissipates within minutes of exposure to open air. No cleaning or degreasing is required.

Can VCI paper protect multiple metals simultaneously?
Yes. The Universal Multi-Metal Grade protects ferrous and non-ferrous metals together without causing galvanic interaction — critical for CKD automotive export kits.

Is VCI paper safe to handle?
Yes. BENZ VCI Paper is TRGS 615 compliant, free from nitrites and heavy metals, and safe for bare-hand handling without PPE.
