Why Metal Cargo Needs VCI Film for International Shipping
Every year, billions of dollars worth of precision-machined metal components — engine blocks, steel coils, valves, CNC machines — cross oceans in standard shipping containers. And every year, a staggering percentage arrives damaged by rust. The culprit? Container rain — condensation that forms inside sealed containers during temperature swings at sea and literally rains down onto your cargo.
Standard plastic wraps and tarpaulins don't solve this. They trap moisture against the metal, actually accelerating corrosion. VCI Film (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor Film) is the engineered solution: a polyethylene film infused with chemicals that sublimate into an invisible protective vapor, actively blocking rust at the molecular level — even in areas the film doesn't physically touch.
How VCI Film Actually Works
VCI molecules embedded in the film sublimate (turn from solid to gas) at room temperature. These invisible molecules travel through the enclosed packaging space and settle on all exposed metal surfaces — including internal cavities, threaded holes, and complex geometries that oils and greases can never reach.
The VCI molecules form a protective layer only a few nanometers thick that blocks the three ingredients of corrosion: metal, moisture, and oxygen. When you open the packaging, the VCI simply dissipates into the air within minutes. No residue. No cleaning. Parts are immediately ready for assembly.
This is the fundamental advantage over traditional rust preventive oils which require expensive solvent degreasing at the destination. For a detailed comparison, see our guide on VCI vs. oil-based rust prevention.
The Container Rain Problem
Container rain occurs when a container crosses climate zones — warm tropical air cools rapidly at sea, and the moisture condenses on the container's steel ceiling. It literally rains inside your container. Learn more about this phenomenon in our dedicated guide: What is Container Rain and How to Prevent It.

Choosing the Right VCI Film Format
Using the wrong format is one of the most common — and most expensive — mistakes in export packaging:
| Format | Best For | Application |
| VCI Shrink Film | Large, irregular machinery — CNC machines, transformers, turbines | Applied loosely then heat-shrunk drum-tight with a heat gun |
| VCI Stretch Film | Uniform palletized loads — stacked steel coils, brake drums | Mechanically stretched under tension using wrapping machines |
| VCI Woven Fabric | Sharp-edged loads — steel beams, pipe bundles | Cut-to-size and sewn/stapled as a puncture-resistant sheath |
| Anti-Static VCI Film | Electronics, PCBs, control panels | ESD protection + corrosion protection simultaneously |

Climate-Specific VCI Solutions Across Our Global Network
Corrosion risk varies dramatically by destination. BENZ Packaging engineers VCI formulations specific to each climate zone:
Middle East — Extreme Heat + Salt Fog
Ports in Dubai and Dammam experience 50°C+ temperatures with dramatic nighttime cooling that creates severe container rain. We use rapid-release VCI inner layers paired with UV-stabilized outer barriers.
Northern Europe — High Humidity + Strict Regulations
Shipments entering Rotterdam, Hamburg, or Antwerp face 80-95% relative humidity year-round plus strict TRGS-615 and REACH chemical requirements. Our films use 100% nitrite-free Propatech Italian masterbatches.
North America — Industrial Scale + MIL-SPEC
Automotive hubs like Detroit, oil & gas in Houston, and heavy industry in Chicago and Pittsburgh demand MIL-PRF-22019E compliance.
East Asia — Precision + Electronics
Toyota/Denso hub Nagoya, shipbuilding giant Busan, and manufacturing corridors in Shanghai and Singapore require near-zero-defect multi-metal VCI with ESD protection.
India — Manufacturing Engine of Asia
We serve automotive hubs in Pune, Chennai, Manesar; engineering centers in Jamshedpur, Kolhapur; and chemical/pharmaceutical corridors in Vadodara, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.
Multi-Metal vs. Single-Metal: Get This Wrong and You'll Cause Corrosion
A critical mistake: using ferrous-only VCI on an assembly that contains copper, brass, or aluminium. Single-metal VCI formulations can actually accelerate tarnishing on yellow metals. Modern assemblies (engine blocks, electronics) are almost always multi-metal. Specify BENZ Multimetal VCI Film to protect the entire metallurgical spectrum simultaneously.
Best Practices for VCI Film Application
- Clean and dry surfaces first — VCI can't adsorb through oil, coolant, or metal shavings
- Seal the packaging — VCI works by maintaining vapor concentration; any hole lets it escape
- Avoid VCI absorbers — Don't let VCI film touch bare cardboard or raw wood (they absorb the chemistry). Use a barrier layer. Critical when using ISPM-15 wooden crating
- Use emitters for large voids — Supplement film with VCI Emitters or VCI Chips inside large machines
- Pair with desiccants on ocean routes — VCI protects the metal; desiccants protect the environment

Frequently Asked Questions
What is VCI Film and how does it work?
VCI Film is polyethylene infused with Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor chemicals that sublimate at room temperature, forming an invisible molecular shield on metal surfaces. It prevents rust by blocking moisture and oxygen. Parts come out clean with zero residue.
What is container rain?
Condensation inside shipping containers caused by temperature swings during ocean transit. Water literally rains from the container ceiling onto cargo. VCI film prevents this moisture from causing rust by maintaining protective vapor inside the sealed packaging. Read more: Container Rain Prevention Guide.
Can VCI film protect copper and aluminium?
Only multi-metal VCI film. Single-metal ferrous formulations can damage these metals. Always specify Multimetal VCI Film for mixed-material assemblies.
Should I use VCI film with desiccants?
Yes — for ocean transit this is the industry gold standard. VCI protects the metal; desiccants control humidity. Calculate your requirement with our Desiccant Calculator.
How long does VCI film protection last?
In sealed packaging: 2 to 5+ years. Stretch films cover 12-24 months transit; heavy shrink films protect outdoor storage for 3+ years.
