Overview

BENZPACK® BEDRY™ ULTRA is the maximum-capacity grade of the BEDRY™ calcium chloride container desiccant family. It uses an ultra-high-purity calcium chloride formulation that raises the absorption ceiling to up to 600% of its own weight, accelerates the onset of absorption, and extends protective service life, so a single installation holds a container dry across the longest and most humid voyages without exhausting its capacity mid-transit.

Where standard BEDRY™ is specified for typical 20 to 30 day ocean routes, BEDRY™ ULTRA is engineered for the punishing cases: 35 to 45 day trans-Pacific and round-Africa sailings, equatorial and monsoon corridors, fully timber-packed heavy machinery, and the highest-value consignments where running out of desiccant capacity in the final week of a voyage is not an acceptable risk. Like every BEDRY™ product it binds absorbed moisture into a stable, leak-proof gel, certified to DIN 55473 and registered under REACH.

Science and Mechanism

Why a Higher-Concentration Formulation Raises the Ceiling

Calcium chloride absorbs moisture by deliquescence: it reacts with water vapour and dissolves into a calcium chloride brine, and the reaction continues until all available calcium chloride has been consumed. The total moisture a unit can capture is therefore governed by the mass of active, available calcium chloride it contains. BEDRY™ ULTRA raises the active-ingredient purity to a minimum of 94%, which increases the quantity of reactive calcium chloride per gram of product and lifts the absorption ceiling to up to 600% of unit weight.

Faster Onset, Sustained to the End of the Voyage

The deliquescent reaction rate is driven by the vapour-pressure differential between the brine and the surrounding air, and that differential is greater for a higher-concentration formulation. ULTRA begins absorbing sooner and holds a higher capture rate deeper into the voyage, so on a 40 to 45 day route it does not approach saturation in the final, often most humid, leg, the window in which an under-specified desiccant programme fails and container rain forms.

When to Specify ULTRA Over Standard BEDRY™

Standard BEDRY™ is the correct, cost-effective choice for typical 20 to 30 day routes and standard cargo. Specify BEDRY™ ULTRA when the voyage is long (35 days or more), the route crosses equatorial or monsoon climate zones, the cargo is heavily timber-packed or otherwise highly hygroscopic, the consignment value is high, or container ceiling anchor points are limited and fewer, higher-capacity units are required. The two grades use the same installation system and can be specified per route from one supplier.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between BEDRY™ and BEDRY™ ULTRA?

Both are leak-proof calcium chloride container desiccants certified to DIN 55473 and registered under REACH, using the same gel-locking housing and pole-mount installation system. The difference is the formulation: ULTRA uses a higher-concentration, ultra-high-purity calcium chloride (minimum 94%) that raises the absorption ceiling to up to 600% of weight, begins absorbing faster, and sustains protection for 90 to 120 days. Standard BEDRY™ (up to 500%, 60 to 90 days) is the cost-effective choice for typical 20 to 30 day routes; ULTRA is specified for the longest and most humid voyages.

When should I choose ULTRA instead of standard BEDRY™?

Specify ULTRA when the voyage is 35 days or longer, the route crosses equatorial or monsoon climate zones, the cargo is heavily timber-packed or highly hygroscopic, the consignment value is high, or container ceiling anchor points are limited and you need fewer, higher-capacity units. For standard cargo on routine 20 to 30 day routes, standard BEDRY™ is the correct specification.

How many ULTRA units does a 40ft container need?

As a baseline, 5 to 6 x 1kg ULTRA pole-mount units for standard cargo and 8 to 10 units for heavily hygroscopic or timber-packed cargo in a 40ft container, fewer than standard BEDRY™ because each ULTRA unit carries more capacity. The precise figure follows the DIN 55473 Desiccant Unit calculation from container volume, packing-material weight, barrier films and voyage duration; BENZPACK provides a complimentary calculation for your exact route and cargo.

Does ULTRA carry the same certifications and leak-proof guarantee?

Yes. BEDRY™ ULTRA is certified to DIN 55473, registered under REACH, and independently verified leak-proof under maritime transit vibration, impact and inversion testing. The absorbed moisture is permanently bound into a stable gel with zero liquid egress, identical to standard BEDRY™.

Can ULTRA be used with BENZPACK VCI films?

Yes. ULTRA manages the bulk atmospheric moisture load while BENZPACK VCI films provide molecular corrosion inhibition on metal surfaces. The two technologies work by different mechanisms, are fully compatible, and are the recommended dual-protection system for high-value metal exports on long routes.
