Export Packaging Compliance Hub

Export packaging compliance hub: standards with correct scope

Compliance searches fail when standards are treated as marketing badges. This hub maps ISPM-15, handling marks, desiccant unit culture, CTU securing principles, SOLAS VGM roles and packing list discipline so RFQs name the right control for each risk.

Purpose

One hub for export packing compliance questions

Quality, logistics and packaging engineers search for ISPM 15 requirements, packing marks, desiccant standards, container securing rules and VGM responsibilities as separate problems. In a real export pack they meet on the same method note. This hub assigns each standard its real scope so buyers do not buy an IPPC stamp expecting rust control, or a desiccant bag expecting a legal wood mark.

Checklist view: export packing standards checklist. Company stack: complete seaworthy packaging company. Ocean system language: ocean freight packaging.

Organisational ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certificates support process consistency. They do not replace grade-tied product documentation, ISPM-15 marks on solid wood packaging material, free volume design or shipper VGM duty. Keep those layers separate when you evaluate suppliers and when you write RFQs.

ISPM-15 scope

Wood packaging material rules buyers mis-state

ISPM-15 applies to solid wood packaging material (WPM) used in trade above the thickness threshold under national programmes: pallets, crates, boxes, skids, cases and dunnage. Treatment and IPPC marking prove phytosanitary control. Many processed wood constructions fall outside solid-wood WPM rules; confirm construction and destination. Repaired solid wood may need re-treatment and re-marking.

Crate product language: ISPM-15 certified export crates. Pallets: ISPM-15 pallets. Custom geometry: custom export crates.

Moisture and corrosion standards

DIN units, VCI grades and barrier free volume

Industrial desiccant programmes often size in unit culture such as DIN 55473. Container-class products may publish capacity differently. Multimetal VCI free volume is a corrosion control, not a wood rule. Aluminium barrier free volume limits moisture ingress for multi-week sealed life. None of these replace ISPM-15 when solid wood is in international trade.

How to run a compliance review

Step order for a packaging compliance review

Start with mode and destination. List solid wood packaging material elements and confirm ISPM-15 treatment and IPPC marks where enforced. List free volume materials and sealed life assumptions. List desiccant product class and sizing basis. List handling marks and packing list identity rules. List VGM process roles if containers will be stuffed under SOLAS rules. Only then accept the method note as complete.

Do not let a single certificate PDF close the review. Organisational ISO, wood marks, product grades and VGM roles answer different questions. The hub exists so those questions stay separate and answerable.

Misuse patterns

Compliance language that should never appear on a quote

Avoid: ISPM makes the pack seaworthy; CTU certified crate product; SOLAS certified packer for VGM; NACE certified VCI without test method context; military approved without grade proof. Replace each with correct scope language from this hub. Buyers who accept badge language without scope get incomplete packs that still fail at sea or at border.

Claims context

Why compliance language shows up in marine claims

Insufficient packing arguments often mix structural failure, open free volume and missing documentation. Compliance discipline is not paperwork for its own sake. Marks, lists and method notes are the audit trail when damage is disputed. Education: insufficient packing marine cargo claims.

Method note compliance fields

Compliance fields every export method note should carry

Mode and destination assumptions; sealed life stages; solid wood packaging material list with ISPM-15 mark inspection result; free volume grade and clean gate; desiccant product class and sizing basis; barrier type if used; handling mark plan; packing list case ID scheme; VGM role statement when containers are stuffed under SOLAS rules; SDS references for chemical products; photo index for high-value units. Missing fields force goods-in improvisation and weaken claims defence.

Immobilisation and structure sit beside compliance, not instead of it: blocking and bracing export, heavy equipment crating, custom export crates.

Technical FAQs

Direct answers for packaging engineers, quality and export teams.

What is this compliance hub for?
It maps export packing standards to their real scope so RFQs and method notes name the correct control for wood, marks, moisture, securing and VGM roles.
Does ISPM-15 make a pack seaworthy?
No. ISPM-15 is phytosanitary control for solid wood packaging material, not climate or corrosion design.
What must appear on an IPPC mark?
IPPC symbol, country code, facility identifier and treatment code, legible and complete.
What is DIN 55473 used for?
Industrial desiccant unit and performance culture for specifying and sizing bags.
Is a packer SOLAS certified for VGM?
Avoid that claim language. Shipper remains responsible for VGM; packers may support weighing processes as agreed.
Do organisational ISO certificates replace product grades?
No. ISO supports management systems. Product grades and wood marks are separate evidence.
Where do packing lists fit compliance?
They reconcile identity and quantities with physical packages so goods-in and claims files can audit the shipment.
What is CTU in packaging language?
Practices for packing and securing cargo transport units. It is not a product certification stamp on a crate.
Do plywood crates always need ISPM-15?
Many processed wood constructions fall outside solid-wood WPM rules, but solid wood members and destination practice must be confirmed.
What documents should a compliance RFQ list?
Wood mark evidence, SDS, organisational ISO where required, method note, packing list format and VGM process roles.
How should a compliance review start?
Mode and destination first, then wood, free volume, desiccant basis, marks, packing list and VGM roles.
Where is ocean system language?
Ocean freight packaging and the seaworthy system page continue climate and mode design.
