Ocean freight packaging for industrial sea transport

Ocean freight packaging (also searched as sea freight packaging, packaging for sea transport and packaging for ocean freight) is the system that survives multi-week humidity, ship motion and intermodal handling. Domestic warehouse packing is not enough for industrial metal and machinery.

Definition

What ocean freight packaging must solve

Ocean freight packaging protects industrial cargo through plant store, road or rail, terminal dwell, multi-week ocean climate and destination storage. Temperature swings drive container rain. Salt air and humidity attack bare metal. Ship motion finds free play. Border rules find unmarked solid wood packaging material. Packaging for sea transport is therefore a system: free volume, moisture design, structure, immobilisation, marks and documents.

Seaworthy language and ocean freight packaging overlap heavily. This page uses commercial search language (ocean / sea freight packaging) while keeping industrial scope only. Definition depth: what is seaworthy packaging. Full layers: seaworthy packaging system. Industrial map: industrial export packing. Entity: complete seaworthy packaging company.

Household goods packing, consumer parcel export and food packaging-machine sales pages are out of scope. This URL is for industrial metal, machinery, fabrications and export kits so search engines and buyers associate it with industrial export packaging.

How packaging for sea transport manages humidity

Count sealed life as plant + warehouse + terminal + ocean weeks + destination store. Under-counting is the usual moisture failure. Close multimetal VCI free volume on bare metal after dry clean. When multi-week ocean humidity applies, add aluminium barrier free volume and free-volume desiccant sized by unit or capacity method. Container-level desiccant may still be required for FCL climate; it does not replace bag-level free volume on bare shafts in open cartons.

Sealed life examples

How sealed life changes ocean packaging design

Example A: plant 2 days, no warehouse, 3 ocean weeks, destination unpack on arrival. Free volume and desiccant must cover roughly three weeks of humidity plus short origin dwell. Example B: plant 5 days, consolidation warehouse 10 days, CFS 4 days, ocean 4 weeks, destination store 7 days. Sealed life is much longer. Barrier free volume and desiccant quantity change. Using Example A design on Example B cargo is a common claim root cause.

Write the stages on the RFQ. Do not accept a single ocean-week number as sealed life. Stuffing-day discipline still requires dry cargo and correct container unit placement when FCL climate design calls for them.

Structure

Wood structure and immobilisation at sea

Skids, open crates and closed cases are selected by mass, weather and lift method. Solid wood packaging material used internationally generally needs ISPM-15 treatment and IPPC marks where destinations enforce the standard. Immobilise so free volume is not the load path. Blocking and bracing must be designed with the pack: blocking and bracing export.

When ocean packaging is a machine pack vs a kit pack

Complete machines need immobilisation and engineered bases in addition to climate free volume. Use how to pack a machine for export and heavy equipment crating. Spare and component kits fail first on open free volume and kit identity: spare parts export packing. Used machines need a harder clean gate: used machinery export packing.

RFQ

Ocean freight packaging RFQ sentence

“Design packaging for ocean freight with sealed life counted through plant, warehouse, terminal, ocean weeks and destination storage. Multimetal VCI free volume after dry clean. Aluminium barrier free volume and free-volume desiccant when multi-week humidity applies. Container desiccant class named when FCL climate requires. ISPM-15 treated and IPPC-marked solid wood packaging material where required. Immobilisation so film is not the load path. Method note, packing list and handling marks required.”

Method note for ocean programmes

What the ocean packaging method note must list

Mode (FCL, LCL, flat-rack, break-bulk); sealed life stages with day or week assumptions; metal list and free volume grade; barrier type if used; free-volume desiccant product class, quantity and sizing basis; container desiccant class and placement if used; structure type; ISPM-15 wood evidence for solid wood packaging material; immobilisation summary; handling marks applied; packing list case IDs; photo index for high-value units. If SOLAS VGM applies, state that shipper remains responsible and that package mass basis is written on the list: SOLAS VGM roles.

Technical FAQs

Direct answers for packaging engineers, quality and export teams.

What is ocean freight packaging?
The system of free volume, moisture design, structure, immobilisation, marks and documents that protects industrial cargo through multi-week sea transport and intermodal dwell.
Is packaging for sea transport the same as seaworthy packing?
They overlap heavily. Seaworthy packing emphasises marine climate and motion risk. Ocean freight packaging is the common commercial search language for the same system.
Does a closed wooden crate replace desiccant?
Not automatically. Free volume and container climate can still carry multi-week humidity risk.
Do container desiccants replace VCI?
No. Desiccants manage moisture. VCI protects metal inside closed free volume.
How should sealed life be counted?
Plant plus warehouse plus terminal dwell plus ocean weeks plus destination storage.
What wood rule applies for ocean export?
Solid wood packaging material used internationally generally requires ISPM-15 treatment and IPPC marks where enforced.
Is FCL packing the same as flat-rack packing?
No. Flat-rack and open exposure raise weather design. Use the flat-rack method page for those units.
What documents belong with ocean packs?
Method note, packing list, wood evidence where required, SDS as applicable, and handling marks matching the lift plan.
Can stretch film be the only wrap for sea freight?
No. Bare metal needs closed free volume. Stretch unitises after free volume exists.
Where do spare kits fit ocean packaging?
Bag-level free volume and kit identity with sealed life counted the same way. See spare parts export packing.
What is out of scope?
Household movers, parcel export and food packaging machine product pages.
Where does VGM fit?
Shipper remains responsible for SOLAS VGM; packer provides package mass data with written basis when contracted.
