Technical FAQs
Direct answers for packaging engineers, quality and export teams.
What is blocking and bracing in export packing?
Designed immobilisation that fills gaps and carries forces into structure so cargo does not shift under transport dynamics.
Is stretch film a brace?
No. Film may unitise light loads but does not provide structural load paths for multi-tonne machinery.
Where should braces contact a machine?
On structural pads, feet or engineered spread plates, never on thin cladding or precision ways without review.
Do timber chocks need ISPM-15 marks?
Solid wood packaging material and dunnage used in international trade generally need treatment and IPPC marks where enforced.
How do braces interact with VCI free volume?
Prefer braces outside bags or shaped cradles; protect bands with edge boards so free volume is not cut.
What is the difference between OEM locks and packaging braces?
OEM locks secure internal machine axes; packaging braces secure the whole unit to the case or CTU.
Can airbags alone secure a heavy machine in a container?
Void fillers help control gaps but are not a substitute for positive base restraint on heavy industrial units.
What photos should immobilisation include?
Pre-lid shots of chocks, braces, axis locks and band routes with case ID visible.
Why do bands fail free volume systems?
High tension over soft bags abrades and collapses free volume, creating moisture and corrosion paths.
How should RFQs specify immobilisation?
Require positive restraint both axes, structural contact, lock lists, marked timber and photo stages, not only the word packing.
Does chock mass affect SOLAS VGM?
Yes. Timber and hardware mass feed shipment mass data. Shipper remains responsible for verified gross mass.
What sequence avoids rework?
Locks and base stops first, free volume after clean gate, external bands on protected paths, photos before close.
