What blocking and bracing means in export packing

Blocking prevents cargo from shifting by filling gaps and providing solid contact faces. Bracing resists forces with members that carry compression, tension or shear into a stronger structure such as a crate base, machine frame or CTU floor fitting. Together they immobilise industrial cargo against the accelerations of trucking, rail, lifting and ocean motion. Stretch film, foam peanuts and hope are not substitutes for designed load paths.

Solid wood used as chocks and braces is wood packaging material when it travels in trade. Treat and IPPC-mark it where ISPM-15 is enforced: ISPM 15 requirements. The mark is phytosanitary only; it does not size a brace for a 12 tonne shift load.

Forces must enter structure, not cladding

Every brace needs a beginning and an end that can carry the force. Pushing a timber wedge against a thin machine panel moves the panel, not the mass. Prefer OEM mount pads, machine feet, cast ribs and crate sills. When contact must land on a finished surface, use load-spread plates and sacrificial protection. Never invent lift or brace points on pressure systems, cable trays or precision ways without engineering review.

Banding is a restraint tool, not a free volume tool. Bands that dig into VCI film or barrier bags create moisture and corrosion paths and then loosen as the bag compresses. Crate interior

Blocking inside export crates and cases

Inside a closed crate, design the cargo to the base first, then add side and end members that lock the unit to sills and posts. Floating a machine on foam in the centre of a large case invites walk under vibration. Maintain contact that cannot creep. Where free volume bags surround the unit, install braces outside the bag against structural frames, or use shaped cradles that the bag can follow without puncture.

CTU voids

Blocking and bracing inside containers and on floors

Container stow creates voids between unit loads. Those voids must be controlled so the first unit does not become a battering ram for the second. Use timber bracing to CTU structure where allowed, void fillers rated for the cargo class, and positive restraint for heavy pieces. CTU packing practices are operational guidance for securing cargo transport units; they are not a product badge to stamp on a crate brochure.

Axis locks

Transport locks versus packaging braces

OEM transport locks secure internal machine axes the packaging team did not design. Packaging braces secure the whole unit relative to the case or CTU. Both are required on complex equipment. Method notes should list lock IDs, torque or pin status, and whether locks stay installed through destination commissioning or must be removed before power-up. Photograph locks before free volume closes.

Banding discipline

Strapping and tension members without destroying climate controls

Steel and composite strapping carry high tension. On export packs they must land on edge protectors and structural rails. Tension over soft free volume collapses bags, exhausts local desiccant geometry and creates abrasion holes. If a band must cross a free volume zone, add a rigid bridge member. Re-tension policies after road legs only apply when free volume integrity is re-checked.

Ocean climate still needs sealed life counting after immobilisation is complete: ocean freight packaging, container desiccant ocean freight, container rain. System definition: seaworthy packaging system.

RFQ language

How to specify immobilisation on an industrial RFQ

State mass, COG method, shipping attitude, and whether stacking is allowed. Require positive restraint for longitudinal and lateral motion into structural members. Require OEM transport locks or engineered equivalents listed on the method note. Require solid wood chocks to be ISPM-15 treated and marked where regulated. Require free volume protection from bands and braces. Require photo stages of immobilisation before lids and covers close. Reject quotes that only say "proper packing" without a chock plan.
